“Dangling from Power Lines: Dramatic Standoff at Rocky Mountain Power Substation in Salt Lake City”

On November 13, 2024, a woman experiencing a serious mental health crisis broke into a Rocky Mountain Power substation in Salt Lake City in a dramatic and dangerous incident. She managed to gain access by climbing a tree branch that had drooped low over the barbed-wire fence, using it almost like a natural ladder to scale the security perimeter

.Once inside the restricted area, she picked up a metal pole and began violently smashing the control panel and other equipment. When police officers arrived at the scene and tried to intervene, she refused to surrender. Instead, she climbed onto a high-voltage transformer and started screaming that “the world was no longer safe for her or future children,” clearly in a state of extreme distress. To prevent her from being electrocuted by the live equipment, authorities were forced to cut power to more than 830 homes in the surrounding area.

As emergency responders raised cherry pickers to safely bring her down from the transformer, the woman grabbed onto the overhead power lines and dangled from them, heightening the already tense and dangerous situation. Officers eventually had to deploy a less-lethal weapon to finally bring the standoff to an end.Following the incident, the woman was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

Once stabilized, she was placed in jail and now faces multiple serious charges, including criminal mischief, property damage, attempted arson, and criminal trespassing. In response to the security breach, Rocky Mountain Power has since removed the tree that had provided the branch she used to climb over the fence, ensuring that such an easy point of entry could not be exploited again.
