She Spent 100 Hours Blindfolded With Her “Boyfriend” — Then She Took It Off and Saw Her Best Friend

A Facebook profile featuring photos and videos of an American man concealed the true identity of a woman. The two met at the University of Chester in 2011. According to the trial evidence, the relationship with the person calling himself “Kye” continued online and by phone for roughly two years before they met face-to-face for the first time in February 2013
.Then a condition was imposed: a blindfold. “Kye” claimed he felt self-conscious about his looks because of brain surgery that had saved his life.

The complainant stated that she never removed the blindfold—not while watching television, travelling in the car, or sunbathing. They spent more than 100 hours together without her ever seeing her partner’s face. In June 2013, during an intimate encounter, she took the blindfold off. Standing in front of her was Gayle, her friend.
Newland always denied any deception. She maintained that both of them knew what was happening and that it was simply a role-playing scenario. The jury did not accept her account. In 2015 she was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment on three counts of assault. The conviction was later overturned on appeal. After a second trial in 2017 she was again found guilty and sentenced to six and a half years.
