The Oregon State Police have officially confirmed the identity of Mark Smith, a 19-year-old young man from Billings, Montana, who mysteriously disappeared more than 50 years ago while on a trip.Back in 1978, a group of loggers made a grim discovery in the remote Holcomb Peak area: fragments of a skull along with pieces of clothing.

At the time, initial forensic analysis mistakenly concluded that the remains belonged to a woman. For decades, the case remained unsolved and misidentified.It was only through the dedicated efforts of the University of North Texas and several private laboratories that the remains were re-examined in 2020, finally determining that they belonged to a male.n

The breakthrough that finally solved the long-cold case came in September 2025, when a relative uploaded a DNA kit. This crucial piece of evidence allowed forensic anthropologist Hailey Collord Stalder to positively identify the remains as those of Mark Smith. After more than five decades of uncertainty and searching, the young man’s remains have at last been returned to his family, bringing a bittersweet sense of closure to a tragedy that had haunted them for generations.
