DIY dad builds dream pool in garden thanks to YouTube tutorials

A dad who loves DIY projects used social media to transform his backyard into a tropical paradise.
A dad of two watched a YouTube video where a woman was making a pool in her backyard, and that gave him the idea to go for it and build one too.
Alex Dodman decided to try something new, even though he had no experience at all. He rented a mini digger and immediately began digging up dirt in his yard to make space for a pool. Keep reading to learn more about his dream project and how he managed to do it without spending too much money!
In 2018, Alex Doman, an ambulance worker from Essex, moved into a rundown home with his partner Sarah and their two young children Allie and Eddie.
The house was a fixer upper and Dodman, now 38, was inspired by social media to tear apart the family home so he could build a dream home for his family.
The renos started with a YouTube video that showed a tradesperson putting up a wall stud.
Dodman, who is employed by the National Health Service, made some cool upgrades to his modern home. He added a gym in the backyard, created a cinema area big enough for the whole family, and even installed a fold-down bed in his stylish home office.
And then he learned the home, purchased for £250,000 (about $322,000 US), had more than doubled in value to £525,000 ($675,000 US).
āWe had the house valued and were told it was now worth Ā£525,000, which I put down to the work Iāve done,ā Doman tells The Sun in February 2022.
Realizing he had a natural talent for DIY, the father was ready for his next project.
Diving in
While taking a lunch break, Dodman explains that he āwatched a YouTube video of a woman in Holland who built her own pool in her garden.ā
Expressing that heās ādreamt of having a poolā and āeven earmarked a little patch to hopefully build it on one day,ā Dodman dove right into his new DIY project.
āAs soon as Iād watched [YouTube video] I rang up and hired a digger. Iād never driven a digger before, so Iād dug this massive hole and then there was no going back.ā
āA blessingā
Though there was no going back he did hit a huge obstacle.
Dodman started building the pool in January 2020 ābut then Covid hit, and [he] couldnāt get any materials for ages.ā
Stuck with a giant hole in his yard, Dodman explains he had to get creative.
Describing the pandemic closures as āa bit of a blessing,ā the DIY dad āstarted buying the things [he] needed from Facebook Marketplace which was a lot cheaper.ā
āZero experienceā
Dodman shows his 247,000 TikTok followers the 12 stages he followed to build āa fully functioning swimming pool in [his] backyard with zero experience.ā
Each clip details various steps of the project, like learning to operate the digger, plumbing, laying bricks to tiling and lastly diving into his new blue pool.
And he did it for less than £10,000 ($12,871 US).
Dodman shares his thoughts on his dream project, saying, āOverall, the toughest part of doing it myself was the plumbing ā it can be really frustrating. If you mess it up, you end up with leaks and things.ā He adds, āBut honestly, it wasnāt as difficult as I expected. Itās sort of like building with water LEGO.ā
After finishing the pool, Dodman also built a garden cabin, a pergola with a big screen for watching games while relaxing in the hot tub, a barbecue area, and a playhouse for his kids.
Explaining he wasnāt āconfident in DIY,ā the renovations hobbyist says he learned by ājust by giving it a go.ā
āIāve made mistakes and stuff doesnāt always turn out how you think but giving it a go is the best way.ā Crediting YouTube for his successes, Dodman adds, āI learned almost everything from YouTube, and there are a lot of buildersā forums online where you can find help on loads of projects, any problem you come across, itās likely someone else has in the past and has written about it online.ā
Dodmanās projects are really impressive, but we suggest you hold off on digging big holes in your backyard.
