The Flight Attendant Who Became a Legend: How Neerja Bhanot Saved 359 Lives During a Hijacking

The legacy of Neerja Bhanot remains one of the most inspiring examples of courage, selflessness, and extraordinary leadership in the face of extreme danger. As a senior flight purser for Pan Am, what began as a routine flight quickly turned into a terrifying international hostage crisis when heavily armed terrorists hijacked the aircraft during a scheduled stopover in Karachi, Pakistan.

As the head of the cabin crew, Neerja immediately took charge of the situation inside the cabin. With remarkable presence of mind and quick thinking, she secretly hid the passports and documents of certain passengers — particularly those who might have been targeted by the hijackers — to protect them from selective harm.Throughout the long and exhausting 17-hour ordeal, her calm and composed demeanor played a vital role in keeping hundreds of frightened passengers steady and hopeful.

She continuously reassured them and maintained order even as tension mounted. When the crisis escalated into chaos with sudden gunfire and explosions, Neerja acted decisively. She swiftly opened the emergency exit doors and deployed the inflatable escape slides, guiding passengers to safety.Even in those final critical moments, she put the lives of others before her own. Instead of escaping first, she stayed behind to help vulnerable passengers, especially young children, out of the aircraft.

Tragically, she was fatally shot while shielding three young boys from the bullets as Pakistani security forces stormed the plane.Her extraordinary bravery and selfless devotion to protecting human lives earned her widespread international admiration and respect. In recognition of her heroism, Neerja Bhanot became the first woman to receive India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra.
