Rebecca Young: The 13-Year-Old Inventor Using Solar Power to Help the Homeless

At just 13 years old, Rebecca Young from Glasgow, Scotland, has been named one of TIME Magazine’s prestigious “Girls of the Year” for inventing a solar-powered thermal blanket aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness. The young inventor first came up with the idea while attending her school’s engineering club.
What began as a simple classroom project soon developed into a practical and innovative solution. Rebecca designed a thermal blanket that uses flexible solar panels to absorb sunlight during the day and convert it into energy, which is stored in a built-in battery.
This stored energy then powers the blanket to provide gentle, consistent warmth throughout the cold night. Her invention quickly gained recognition after winning a national award in the UK. Impressed by the potential impact of her design, the technology company Thales stepped in to offer support.
Thanks to their collaboration, working prototypes were successfully produced and distributed to several charities that assist the homeless community.Rebecca has expressed her hope that her story will encourage other young people around the world to pursue their ideas. She wants to show that age is no barrier and that even a single idea, when developed with determination, can grow into something meaningful that helps others and makes a real difference in society.
