24-Year-Old YouTuber Rows 9 Hours to Forbidden North Sentinel Island, Leaves Diet Coke, and Faces 5 Years in Prison

A 24-year-old YouTuber from Scottsdale, Arizona, spent months carefully planning an illegal trip to the forbidden North Sentinel Island — home to one of the world’s most isolated tribes, the Sentinelese, who have killed every outsider who has ever tried to land on their shores. His name is Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov. He rowed for 9 hours in a small rubber dinghy, guided only by GPS. Once he reached the beach, he blew a whistle for nearly an hour in an attempt to attract attention, but no one appeared. He then left a can of Diet Coke and a coconut as an offering in the sand, filmed a short video, collected some sand samples, and rowed back to safety.Local fishermen spotted him during his return and alerted the authorities. Indian police arrested him two days later in Port Blair. He now faces up to 5 years in prison for violating strict laws protecting the island and its people.
The Sentinelese have lived in complete isolation for an estimated 60,000 years. They have zero immunity to modern diseases — even a simple cold carried by a visitor could potentially wipe out the entire small tribe of around 150 people. This isn’t the first time someone has tried. In 2018, American missionary John Allen Chau made repeated attempts to contact the tribe. He was shot with arrows, including a metal-tipped one that pierced the Bible he held up as protection.
Despite being wounded, he went back. Fishermen who had dropped him off later witnessed the tribe dragging his body along the beach and burying it. His body was never recovered.Indian police told Polyakov he was extremely lucky he made no contact with the tribe — “otherwise he would have met the same fate.”The case has sparked intense debate online about thrill-seeking, respect for indigenous isolation, and the deadly risks of forcing contact with uncontacted peoples.Would you ever take such a dangerous risk for views or adventure, or do you think the island and its people should remain completely off-limits? Let me know your thoughts!
