In July 2010, in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, a shocking and tragic discovery came to light when a teenage daughter stumbled upon what she suspected were human remains hidden inside her mother’s locked hallway closet. Disturbed and frightened, she immediately contacted the police.Upon arriving at the home, officers initially examined the items—wrapped in plastic and stored in containers—and mistakenly believed they were not human remains.
They reportedly told the young woman she could dispose of them herself, leaving the matter unresolved for the moment.The very next day, however, the daughter reached out to authorities again after finding additional suspicious items in the same closet. This time, investigators took a closer look and confirmed the horrifying truth: the objects were indeed human skeletal remains of infants, concealed inside coolers—one of which had been sealed with concrete for added concealment. Forensic analysis would later reveal the grim details of multiple concealed births and deaths.The chilling find quickly led to the arrest of the mother, 44-year-old Michele Kalina (sometimes reported as Michelle Kalina), a local home-health aide.
She was initially charged with abuse of a corpse as the investigation deepened.As detectives dug further into the case, a disturbing pattern emerged. Authorities determined that Kalina had secretly hidden at least six pregnancies over a span of more than a decade, concealing them entirely from her husband and even from her longtime boyfriend (with whom the children were conceived during an ongoing affair). Tragically, at least four of the newborns were allegedly born alive and then killed shortly after birth, with their tiny bodies hidden in the family home—some in coolers, others encased in concrete, all stashed away in that same locked closet to prevent discovery.The case shocked the Berks County community and drew widespread national attention due to its horrific nature and the prolonged secrecy involved.
Kalina faced escalated charges including criminal homicide, and she ultimately pleaded guilty in 2011 to murdering one of the infants while admitting to concealing the remains of the others.
