Andrew Johnson, a determined 16-year-old wrestler from New Jersey, was forced to cut off his dreadlocks by a referee just minutes before his school match, under the threat of immediate disqualification if he refused to comply.Although Andrew ultimately agreed to have his hair cut and went on to win the match, his family strongly criticized the referee’s actions.
They stated that the official had not mentioned any problem with his hair during the initial pre-match inspection. According to the family, the demand was suddenly enforced under intense pressure. They defended the coaches involved and described the incident as deeply humiliating for the young athlete.
The family also argued that the referee’s decision may have been discriminatory, emphasizing that dreadlocks are an important part of cultural and racial identity for many young Black individuals.The controversial incident quickly gained national attention and sparked a heated public debate about racism in sports, cultural sensitivity, and the fairness of existing athletic regulations. In response, the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights opened an official investigation into the case. Following the probe, the referee was ultimately sanctioned.
