“‘He Got in the Way’: Mother Tattoos Black Dot on 22-Month-Old Toddler’s Arm”

On May 4, 2026, Kentucky State Police responded to a disturbing child abuse complaint at a residence in Monticello, Kentucky. Upon arrival, officers discovered 27-year-old Brook McDaniel and her 22-month-old toddler son. The young child had a fresh black dot tattoo on his right forearm, with visible redness and irritation surrounding the area, indicating it had been recently done. When questioned by police, McDaniel claimed the tattoo was an accident.
She stated that she had been tattooing her own leg when her toddler “got in the way” and stuck his arm directly into the path of the tattoo gun. She also told authorities that the child “wanted it.”However, witness accounts told a very different story. Multiple people who were present at the home reported that McDaniel had intentionally tattooed the 22-month-old boy, giving him what is sometimes referred to as a “party dot.” They claimed she even said the toddler “wanted it.”Authorities emphasized the obvious: a 22-month-old child is far too young to consent to any permanent body modification.
At that age, toddlers can barely speak in full sentences, let alone understand the lifelong consequences of getting a tattoo. In addition to the injury, officers noted that the living conditions inside the home were deplorable. Due to serious concerns for the child’s immediate safety and welfare, they contacted the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) to conduct an emergency assessment.Brook McDaniel was subsequently arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault (child abuse).
She is currently being held on a $5,000 cash bond. For context, the minimum legal age to get a tattoo in Kentucky is 16 years old, and even then it requires written parental consent. Tattooing a toddler is not only illegal but widely regarded as clear child abuse. This incident, which occurred just five days ago, has sparked strong public outrage as details continue to emerge.
