“Death Row Inmate Andre Thomas Ate His Own Eyes to Avoid Execution”

The case took place in Texas, USA, and its central figure is Andre Thomas, a man currently on death row for the brutal murder of his wife, Laura Boren, and their two small children in 2004.According to court records, on March 27, 2004, Thomas stabbed his 20-year-old wife Laura and their two children — 4-year-old son Andre Jr. and 13-month-old daughter Leyha — to death in their home. He then cut out their hearts and placed them in separate plastic bags.
Thomas later told authorities that he had acted “by order of God,” claiming he believed his wife and children had been possessed by demons. He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.Years later, while imprisoned on death row, Thomas’s mental health deteriorated dramatically. He had long been diagnosed with schizophrenia and suffered from severe psychotic episodes. In 2009, in a horrifying act of self-mutilation, he gouged out his right eye and ate it. Several years later, in 2015, he removed his remaining left eye and swallowed it as well.
Thomas reportedly told prison officials that he destroyed his eyes so that the state could not execute him, believing that without eyes he could not be put to death. Medical experts have stated that his actions were directly linked to his untreated and severe schizophrenia.Despite his extreme psychological condition and clear evidence of serious mental illness, the Texas justice system has continued to uphold his death sentence.
Appeals based on his mental competency have been repeatedly denied. The case has sparked intense debate about the intersection of severe mental illness and the death penalty in the United States, raising difficult questions about whether individuals with profound psychiatric disorders should be executed.
