“20-Year-Old Student Risks His Life in Burning Building to Rescue Trapped Family — Then Hides It From His Mother”
On March 24, 2026, a 20-year-old university student named Nguyen Le Tu had just finished his gym workout and was riding his motorbike home through the streets of Hanoi’s Hoang Mai Ward when he noticed thick, black smoke pouring from a six-story building. Seven people were trapped inside, with the main stairwell completely blocked by raging flames. In a desperate attempt to escape, two men had already smashed through the corrugated iron roof using hammers, creating a makeshift exit route.Without hesitation, Tu abandoned his motorbike on the side of the street, quickly climbed onto the rooftop of an adjacent building, and joined the rescue effort.
He immediately helped lower two elderly people down a bamboo ladder to safety. But then he learned that two women and three young children were still trapped deeper inside the burning building. From that moment on, he navigated entirely by touch, feeling his way through the burning building with nothing but his hands to guide him.Working alongside another brave rescuer, Tu managed to reach the trapped family just as professional firefighters arrived on the scene. Thanks to their courageous efforts, all seven victims were successfully brought to safety. Tu and several of the rescued individuals were later taken to the hospital for treatment due to smoke inhalation.That same evening, when he finally called his family, Tu casually told his mother that he had simply “fallen” earlier that day.
