“She Was Babysitting When US Marshals Handcuffed Her: Innocent Grandmother Jailed for 6 Months Due to Faulty Facial Recognition”

In 2025, Angela Lipps, a 50-year-old American grandmother from Tennessee, was suddenly arrested at her own home by US Marshals. She was accused of being involved in a serious bank fraud case that had taken place more than 1,200 miles away in North Dakota. The entire case began with facial recognition software. Investigators had reviewed surveillance footage from a bank showing a woman using a fake military ID to withdraw cash.

The facial recognition system matched the woman in the video to Angela Lipps based solely on physical similarities.Without conducting thorough verification or additional investigation, authorities moved forward with her arrest. Angela was handcuffed inside her home in front of the young children she was babysitting at the time. She was then incarcerated and held without bail for nearly four months before being extradited to North Dakota. In total, she spent almost six months behind bars.Throughout this entire nightmare, Angela consistently maintained her innocence.

She insisted that she had never even set foot in North Dakota and had nothing to do with the crimes. The turning point finally came when her lawyer obtained her bank records, which clearly proved that she was in Tennessee at the exact time the crimes were committed in North Dakota. She was released on Christmas Eve. However, the personal cost was devastating. While she was detained and unable to pay her bills, Angela lost her home, her car, and even her beloved dog. To this day, she has never received any official apology from the authorities.
