“Not Guilty: Man Who Shot and Killed 34-Year-Old Pregnant Woman in Seattle Escapes Prison Due to Insanity Verdict”

Cordell Goosby, an American man from Chicago with a prior criminal record, was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2023 murder of Eina Kwon, a 34-year-old pregnant woman and business owner, in a random shooting that took place in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of June 13, 2023, when Goosby approached the couple’s car at a traffic light on Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street and opened fire without any apparent provocation.According to the King County prosecutor’s office, Goosby readily admitted to the crime shortly after the shooting, even approaching police officers with his hands raised and stating, “I did it.” However, following thorough psychiatric evaluations by experts from both the defense and the prosecution, it was determined that he was suffering from severe psychosis and was not aware of the nature or consequences of his actions at the time of the attack. Both sides ultimately agreed on the insanity finding, leading to no full trial taking place

.As a direct result of the verdict, Cordell Goosby will be involuntarily committed to a state psychiatric hospital for treatment. He could potentially remain there for the rest of his life, as his release will only be possible after undergoing strict, ongoing evaluations and reviews by medical professionals and the court system to ensure he no longer poses a danger to society.

The case sent shockwaves through the local Seattle community and beyond, sparking intense discussions about mental health, public safety, random gun violence in downtown areas, and the legal standards for the insanity defense. Many residents expressed outrage and sadness over the loss of Eina Kwon — who was eight months pregnant with her unborn child at the time — and the injury sustained by her husband, Sung Kwon, who survived being shot in the arm. The heartbreaking incident left a deep impact on the Korean-American community and highlighted ongoing concerns about crime and mental illness in the city.
