Pediatricians and dentists strongly advise against the practice of giving a baby a bottle to fall asleep with.Dental professionals highlight that “bottle-propping” during bedtime is one of the main contributors to tooth decay in young children
. Although it might feel like an easy way to calm an infant and help them sleep, allowing a bottle in the mouth overnight can cause a serious issue called baby bottle tooth decay (also known as early childhood caries). When milk, formula, or sugary juices remain in contact with the teeth for hours—especially during sleep—the sugars feed harmful oral bacteria.
These bacteria then generate acids that rapidly erode the protective enamel layer, frequently starting with the upper front teeth. The result can be severe cavities that develop early, causing pain and affecting a child’s oral health long before they are old enough to attend preschool
.The best way to prevent this avoidable problem is to build good oral care routines from the very beginning. Experts suggest completing all bottle or breastfeeding sessions well before putting the baby down for the night, then gently cleaning the gums with a soft cloth or brushing any erupted teeth. Keeping feedings separate from sleep times helps interrupt the prolonged exposure to sugars and stops the acid attacks on developing teeth
. These simple preventive measures help protect a child’s first set of teeth, preserve their healthy smile, and lay the groundwork for excellent dental health that lasts a lifetime.(Source: American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
