Colomares Castle is a Spanish monument built between 1987 and 1994. Located in Benalmadena near the Costa del Sole, in the province of Malaga, it is dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the real discovery of America, already reached by the traveler Amerigo Vespucci (from which it takes its name), but confused by him with East Asia. The extravagant forms of the building, which is not a real castle, are due to the mixture of different Mediterranean architectural styles that have influenced the culture Spanish; among the various are recognizable the Neo-Gothic, the Neo-Romanesque and the Neo-Byzantine. Work of Esteban Martin, aided by two local masons, it is built mainly in stone, concrete and brick, surrounded by gardens and rich in vegetation. There are also a myriad of symbols that refer to Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the monarchs of Catholicism. It offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the hill on which it stands.
